I have been on the hunt for a good baby hat pattern using worsted weight yarn. It's hard to match the sheer cuteness of my usual go-to gift, the Serendipity hat, but I wanted something simple, and this garter ear flap hat from Purl Soho seemed like just the ticket.
Good things about this hat:
-it's cute -- ear flaps! an adorable pixie shape!
-it taught me how to do short rows (see purl soho's great tutorial here)
-it also involves an easy new method for doing pom poms, which is great because I am really bad at making pom poms
Bad things about this hat:
-it seems unnecessarily complicated. One of the great pleasures of knitting in the round is that all you have to do is knit. Doing garter stitch in the round creates an interesting construction challenge, but I'm not sure how much more I like the end product. Also, you inevitably end up with a funky seam (known in knitting jargon as a "jog") where the rows meet.
When I made my second version, I used this trick to avoid the jog, which results in a cleaner look but also makes the decrease section more complicated.
So the hunt for a cute worsted weight baby hat continues...any suggestions?
