Last year, our friend Lisa Marie gave us some spiced apple rings that I've been thinking about ever since. Waffles will never be the same again after tasting them topped with these delicious, tart-sweet-spicy apples.
So, when we picked our bumper crop of apples, I called Lisa Marie for her expert canning assistance, and we spent a Sunday making up spiced apple rings and apple butter. So much fun! Also a lot of work, but well worth it for those delicious apples.
I certainly plan to keep some for myself, but I'll also be giving a few jars to lucky family and friends, so I picked up some labels from Hill's Kitchen.
A while back, I was browsing The New Crewel and I noticed some embroidered canning jar tops. I must admit that at the time I thought they were a little excessive -- if I'm going to spend the time to embroider, I generally want to make something more permanent. But now I get it. If you're canning something from your own garden, you've put so much of yourself into the jar; of course you want the outside to be just as personal and unique.
