This week in the garden: Sunny days

There is something improbable about flowers this delicate growing on a 6-foot stalk, but such is the magic of the hollyhock.  

And tiger lilies.  They are so common in DC that it's easy not to notice them, but they are stunning. 


I had never seen this double-flowered variety before I came here, and the first summer we lived in DC, I couldn't get over them -- all those bright, overflowing blooms.
